New Podcast Show - Southern States & Blacks are the Most Obese in the Nation!

Welcome Back Everyone,

Ethnic Health & Health Disparities 101: Breakin' Down the Issues is an international podcast show highlighting many of the current and newsbreaking health and medical issues affecting ethnic and health disparity communities around the world. Today's show is:

"Southern States and Blacks are the Most Obese in the Nation."

This is a report straight from the Centers for Disease Control & Prevention (CDC) Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report issue -- July 18, 2008 - Volume 57, Number 28: pages - 765-768. In this very significant report it indicates another disturbing trend that Southern states and African Americans are getting more obese than other portions of the United States. The national media (CBS, NBC, and ABC) highlighted this report in their various news outlets. Here are a few of the key points:
  • Mississippi, Alabama and Tennessee lead the Nation when it comes to Obesity!
  • Colorado was the least obese state.
  • Blacks had the highest obesity prevalence among all groups surveyed!
  • Black Women had a 39.0% prevalence rate of obesity.
  • Black Men had a 32.1% prevalence rate of obesity.

Again, I think this is SIGNIFICANT DATA coming from the Federal Government (CDC) indicating that we have a SERIOUS PUBLIC HEALTH PROBLEM -- OBESITY -- in our country. In fact in this report, the CDC investigators suggested that from this data, we as a country need to do the following:

"Priority should be given to interventions that move beyond increasing individual awareness and provide the environmental and policy changes that support behavior change, particularly among those with the greatest need."

This is a power policy statement from the Centers for Disease Control & Prevention encouraging other Federal, State, County, Private Industry, non-Profit and Community-Based organizations to take the lead in changing these disturbing and life-threatening trend.

In my podcast show, I highlight these issues but I also give you OTHER DATA and MY MEDICAL ANTHROPOLOGIST'S interpretation of other issues that were not reported from the national media. So check out my latest EHHD 101 show right here:
